Power Converter

The Power Converter lets you convert between five commonly used power units: watts, kilowatts, horsepower, BTU per hour, and foot-pounds per second. Power measures the rate at which energy is transferred or converted, and is central to electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, automotive specifications, and HVAC system sizing.

The watt is the SI unit of power, defined as one joule per second. Kilowatts are simply 1,000 watts and are the standard unit for electrical appliances and electricity billing. Horsepower is the traditional unit for engine and motor ratings, with one mechanical horsepower equaling approximately 745.7 watts. BTU per hour is used extensively in the American HVAC industry for heating and cooling capacity ratings. Foot-pounds per second is used in some mechanical engineering contexts.

The converter uses watts as the internal base unit. Every input value is first converted to watts, then converted from watts to the target unit. The conversion factors are based on standard international definitions. For instance, one mechanical horsepower equals exactly 550 foot-pounds per second, or approximately 745.69987 watts.
